Along with Gene Ammons and Stanley Turrentine, Dexter Gordon was one of the top ballad players of the '60s. Having already made his name in the bebop era and as an expatriate in Europe, Gordon returned to the States to record a series of fine Blue Note discs during the first half of the decade.

Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He was one of the first players of the instrument in the bebop idiom of musicians such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell. Gordon's height was 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm), so he was also known as "Long Tall Dexter" and "Sophisticated Giant". His studio and performance career spanned over 40 years.

DEXTER GORDON - Ballads. Boxset, Compilation · 1991. Filed under Hard Bop By DEXTER GORDON.

Dexter Gordon was one of the first graduates of the American Swing and BeBop scene, and would go on to not only develop and sustain the movement, but redefined much of the jazz vocabulary we today, take almost for granted. His discography is immense, and the number of first rate talent he’s worked with is both impressive, and staggering. Dexter Gordon is one of the few in jazz who’s managed to create his own trademark, a trademark that defines not only an era in this country, but one that’s so impressive, that it’s still being presented note for note to this very day.

There’s almost nothing provocative or pretentious here, and that’s a good thing, making for a smooth unfettered evening in front of the stereo with a glass of single malt, oversized coffee table magazines, unbuttoned collars, and stoking feet.Review by Jenell Kesler
