Lionel Tertis (1876-1975) stands in the company of YsaŸe, Kreisler, Casals, Thibaud and Rubinstein as one of the greatest instrumentalists - and arguably the greatest viola player - of all time. Such composers as Arnold Bax, Holst, and Vaughan Williams all wrote significant works for him; he was a member of a number of prominent string quartets; and he was later to design and promote his own 'Tertis model' viola. He is virtually synonymous with the increasing importance of the viola as a solo and recital instrument alongside the violin and the cello.

The name of Lionel Tertis may not be as well known as that of Pablo Casals, but what he did for his instrument - the viola - was similar to that what Casals did for the cello. Tertis moved the viola out of its usual context as an accompanimental instrument and helped establish it as a viable solo voice. There has probably never been a collection boasting such a wealth of acoustically recorded chamber music as Lionel Tertis: The Complete Vocalion Recordings. On the first disc alone we are treated to three Mozart trios, including the "Kegelstatt," Schubert's B flat Trio, Op. 99, and the Four Bagatelles, Op.

Lionel Tertis, CBE (29 December 1876 – 22 February 1975) was an English violist and one of the first viola players to find international fame. He was also a noted teacher. YouTube Encyclopedic. White's biography is the last word on Tertis and no less than its iconic subject merits.

Lionel Tertis was born in West Hartlepool in 1876, the son of a Russian father and Polish mother, both naturalized Britons. He devoted his life to the cause of viola, then the 'Cinderella' of string instruments. Tertis can be said to have completely revolutionized the viola as a solo instrument.
