Earthy Passionate Confident Rousing Warm Joyous Romantic Exuberant. The Great Aretha Franklin: The First 12 Sides.
Before Aretha hit big with her stomping southern soul sound in the late 60s, she’d already had quite a career. Beginning as a gospel singer Franklin spent the early 60s recording in a variety of styles to varying success. While her other releases were overproduced and poppy, these very early recordings with the Ray Bryant group are beautiful jazz vocal stylings in the manner of Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald.

net in advance of its March 22, 2011, release at all physical and digital retail outlets through Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT. The wide range of studio and live recordings that Aretha made for Columbia from the summer of 1960 to the fall of 1965 have been a source of controversy and heated critical debate for nearly a half-century. There is unanimous agreement, however, that Aretha’s years at Columbia were a necessary step in her artistic evolution.
Item not in the original case. Item may come repackaged. This is a great set of Franklin's singles (in mono like many of us originally heard them) from the first years at Atlantic Records that have (for me) some of her best performances. Distilling an artist's work down to (hopefully for the artist and the record label) more commercial songs from the over eighty plus tracks she recorded during these years is usually a gamble. And while some of Franklin's better performances included on her albums aren't here, what is here is of high quality for those people who want a collection of her early sides for the Atlantic label.
