Strauss: Friedenstag State Opera Chorus/Dresden li (DG) £1. 9. These discs are the last completed instalments of a cycle of Strauss operas that Giuseppe Sinopoli left unfinished when he died earlier this year. Ariadne was actually his last recording, and it's difficult in retrospect not to see the piece as being emblematic of Sinopoli's life and work. Strauss's opera about opera hymns the power of music and theatre to transcend backstage vicissitudes and personal traumas.

Giuseppe Sinopoli (Italian pronunciation: ; 2 November 1946 – 20 April 2001) was an Italian conductor and composer. Sinopoli was born in Venice, Italy, and later studied at the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Venice under Ernesto Rubin de Cervin and at Darmstadt, including being mentored in composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen. He also obtained a degree in medicine from the University of Padua, and completed a dissertation on criminal anthropology.

Staatskapelle Dresden Giuseppe Sinopoli – director. What a pity that this is Giuseppe Sinopoli's valedictory; it leaves us to imagine how glorious the rest of his Strauss opera readings may've been. Here, in the composer's most transparent, un-sentimental score, Sinopoli gets playing from the Dresden forces that makes everything Strauss and Hoffmansthal were driving at absolutely clear.
