Like the rest of the National catalog, Trouble Will Find Me is subtly insinuating; at first it seems almost free of hooks, then six listens later it’s difficult to get it unstuck. It burrows and then resides, first easy to forget then basically impossible. Trouble Will Find Me, is that album that forced a band into the spotlight, the melodies flame high over its vocals, allowing for a new sound for The National, that is the only noticeable difference here from other The National albums. Vocals are as they have always been, hushed by quiet words and humanely.

It's also their funniest, and most self-referential. The National may find it impossible ever to relax, but they have learned to stop struggling on Trouble Will Find Me, their leanest and most aerodynamic record yet. Most descriptors of the National’s musicianship- the exacting performances, Matt Berninger’s oaken baritone, the allegiances with the equally finicky St. Vincent and Sufjan Stevens- can double as evidence for self-serving arguments about how they’re boring

Contribute today and get Trouble Will Find Me by the National as a thank-you gift. Lot and his wife are key elements of the Bible, the Torah, and the Quran. As the story goes, Lot and his family flee the city of Sodom, upon which the Lord is raining fire and brimstone for the wickedness of its inhabitants. The Lord gives Lot one pivotal instruction: don't look back. Ineffable transcendence aside, the National also succeed on the merits of simply being an excellent rock band. Trouble Will Find Me ranges from moody ballads to driving rockers, but true to the band's subversive nature, the rockers are more mellow than they first appear, and the ballads drip with menace. Rather than relying on traditional rock riffs, brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner craft a subtle, pulsing guitar bed; every once in a while, a guitar figure will sneak up as a hypnotic hook.

Trouble Will Find Me may be The National’s funniest album to date. Not that it has a whole lot of competition. The bookish Brooklynites don’t typically drop punchlines, although Matt Berninger has snuck a few sharp absurdities into his lyrics ( I’m a perfect piece of ass, like every Californian. Trouble Will Find Me is no different. Following 2010's massively successful High Violet, the new record reins it in and tones down the arena-ready rock with songs that are immediately recognizable as the National, but never come across as generic or insincere.
