Thrice - The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire & Water flac album

The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire & Water is Thrice's fifth studio album. It consists of the first two volumes of The Alchemy Index, a four-disc concept album that was split between two releases, the first in October 2007 and the second in April 2008.

Released October 16, 2007, The Alchemy Index is in some ways a logical progression from Vheissu, but in others, a deep dive into brand new territory for Thrice. It is a concept album with four parts corresponding to the four classical elements. Like a fine meal with multiple courses, it presents the breadth of what Thrice can do musically and lyrically, from hardcore to ambient, blues to grunge. Vol. 1 Fire serves up a heavy hardcore sound, dissonant chords, and aggressive vocals.

Thrice enters conceptual territory with The Alchemy Index, a four-part homage to the classical elements of fire, water, earth, and air. Turning to prog rock is a tricky move for any band to make, particularly one on the Vagrant roster, and Thrice tackles the project's fire and water themes - both of which are given their own EP and packaged together to comprise Alchemy's first double-disc set - with a cumbersome approach. The problem isn't necessarily the music, since the "Fire" disc is very similar to Thrice's previous work

Fire is the blistering assault that should be pretty easier to digest for most Thrice fans. Water is more challenging for me, but it's really getting to me now. The Whaler and Kings On The Main, are blowing my mind. I've been a fan of Thrice since 2009, and I remember hearing Open Water on YouTube, I ultimately decided to give the entire album a listen. It's amazing at how they truely capture the elements of fire and water, and with so much beauty. Water is especially good with this, lyrically and musically giving you the image of being out at sea, stranded, it's definitely a chill-out CD. Fire on the other hand is really in your face with it's music and lyrics, definitely giving you the aroma of fire, metaphorically, of course.

The Alchemy Index Volumes I & II: Fire & Water is a triumphant exploration of the elements. Thrice have set a lofty goal and reached it with ease by effortlessly capturing the brittle heat and intensity of fire, and the ethereal beauty and mystery of water, without ever becoming cheesy or going over-the-top. We can only count the days for the release of the second half of this project
