Following the massive success of their debut, Moodfood, studio maestros Moodswings, consisting of Fred Hood and Grant Showbiz, returned with their 1997 follow-up, Psychedelicatessen. Moodfood was a breath of fresh air, and a tough act to follow, but Psychedelicatessen manages to live up to the high expectations created by that record. The duo incorporates steel drums and concert pianists into tracks that envelope the listener, while creating a thoroughly engaging blend of dance, trance, pop, and rock.
Billy Bragg producer Grant Showbiz bids, on this second Moodswings disc, to become the '90s answer to Mike Batt-the Brit impresario (remember the Wombles?) who produced kitchen-sink instrumental exotica for the lumpen proletariat in the late '70s. That's Tanita Tikaram (we think) in "Together as One (Luminous)," but she brings little to an album that is essentially faux electronica/world beat for boutique browsers.
Psychedelicatessen is the second studio album by Threshold, released in late 1994. It was their only studio album to feature Glynn Morgan on vocals until his return in 2017, and their only album with Nick Harradence playing drums. The band's members were displeased with the sound quality on the original release of the album, and had long desired to do a complete remix. Their first fan club release Decadent, released in 1999, contained remixes of three songs from the album.
