The Beach Boys is the 25th studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on June 10, 1985. Produced by Steve Levine, the album is the band's first recording after the drowning death of founding member Dennis Wilson. It was also the band's first album to be recorded digitally and the last released by James William Guercio's Caribou Records

20/20 is the 15th studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on February 10, 1969. The LP was named for being their 20th overall album release. Much of it consists of outtakes from earlier albums. It reached number 3 on UK record charts and number 68 in the US. Brian Wilson was absent during most of the album's recording after admitting himself into a psychiatric hospital, requiring brothers Carl and Dennis to retrieve several outtakes he had recorded years earlier.

Since the Beach Boys had too many hits to fit onto one 20-track collection, it made sense to have two separate 20-track discs, but the dividing line is arbitrary. For its three quarters, Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 appears to be a straight chronological trawl through the hits, beginning with "Surfin' Safari" and running through "Barbara An. Upon close inspection, a number of major songs - "Surfin'," "Shut Down," "In My Room," "Don't Worry Baby" - are missing, yet that portion of the album plays very well

NOTE: Although The Beach Boys' reputation was built as a singles act, it was through listening to their albums that I really grew to love them. The depth of their albums, starting with Surfer Girl on, began to be filled with not only the familiar hit singles, but increasingly challenging album cuts and production touches that made them the envy of their contemporaries.

Here are all the hits and key album tracks, and an assortment of unreleased material that illuminates Brian Wilson and company's immense contribution to the development of pop music. Especially fascinating are the assembled fragments from Wilson's abandoned 1966 masterwork, Smile. A fifth disc features demos, radio spots, live tracks, and studio goodies for the hardcore fan. The set confirms Brian's hardworking genius, but also gives each member his due, especially the late Carl Wilson. I was not disappointed. It is a great overview, and includes many rarities that I had never heard before. A really great collection.
