But for a first-rate conductor with a first-rate orchestra on a full-price label, this 1984 cycle of the Beethoven symphonies by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic on Deutsche Grammophon is arguably the worst ever recorded. That Karajan was a first-rate conductor who made many great recordings is inarguable. That his 1963 cycle of the Beethoven symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic on DG is among the two or three greatest is debatable.

Karajan: Beethoven Symphonies (1963) is a set of studio recordings made in 1961 and 1962 by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan. It is the second of four cycles of Beethoven's nine symphonies that von Karajan conducted, and the first of three for the German record label Deutsche Grammophon. The complete set was first released in 1963 in Europe, and as a result the cycle of symphonies is now generally known as the 1963 cycle.

Von Karajan's interpretation of these symphonies is the best I've heard. Dubbed "The German Perfectionist", Von Karajan lives up to this appellation throughout these recordings. His readings of the Nine are as close to the way the Master himself would have conducted them as you are likely to find, and the Berlin Philharmonic, always capable of wonderful performances, are glorious under Von Karajan's direction.

Karajan's Adagio spans several centuries and musical eras, from the aforementioned Baroque to the post-Romantic 20th Century. In addition to Albinoni/Giazotto, Pachelbel, Sibelius, and Beethoven, listeners will find compositions by Mozart, Massenet, Vivaldi. Brahms, Grieg, Mahler, and . With such a diverse group of composers, even though the pieces are leisurely and gentle, they also express a wide range of musical moods, ranging from the pathos of Grieg's Anse's Death to the pastoral tranquility of Mozart's 4th Movement from his Divertimento in B-flat major.

Herbert von Karajan (German: (listen); born Heribert Ritter von Karajan; 5 April 1908 – 16 July 1989) was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, he was a dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. Part of the reason for this was the large number of recordings he made and their prominence during his lifetime

Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956
