The Kinks came into their own as album artists - and Ray Davies fully matured as a songwriter - with The Kink Kontroversy, which bridged their raw early British Invasion sound with more sophisticated lyrics and thoughtful production

The Kink Kontroversy. The Kink Kontroversy Tracklist. 1. Milk Cow Blues Lyrics. 2. Ring the Bells Lyrics.

All in all, The Kink Kontroversy showed the Kinks were no one-trick pony, and Ray's writing had expanded both lyrically and musically. In the meantime, Davies and company continued releasing a highly impressive batch of singles – all leading up to their first true masterpiece, Face to Face. The Kink Kontroversy continues the band's evolution from generic Brit-Invasion group to a unique creative band. There are still echoes of their "generic" past that haunt this album, but at the same time there is enough of Ray Davies's creative spirit to mark the album as a significant turning point. The opening Milk Cow Blues is a blues standard, a throwback to the first two albums but at least it's energetic and spirited enough whereas other covers seemed bland and unimpressive
