Happy Birthday Sweet 16 was written by the very talented Clive Piggott and recorded at Gooseberry, a 16 track studio in Soho. Phil designed the fold out sleeve which featured photos of Jill Newman and Stuart Cunningham (who sang backing harmonies on the demo version of the song to great effect). However, I would plead that the album is not postmodern in the derogatory sense because it is very much rooted in an affection for (and full knowledge of) its sources. In this sense, it's perhaps closest to the correct understanding of deconstruction, which is open to all manner of new meanings and new contexts but insists that the preceding meaning must be carefully studied. It originally had lyrics and there's a version of it by Clive Pig and the Hopeful Chinamen with some great vocalisations by Clive Pig. This version is particularly notable for the wonderful drums by fellow Hopeful Chinaman Gary Hawkins.
