Todd Rundgren's Utopia is the debut album by the American band Todd Rundgren's Utopia. Rundgren (who was primarily a pop musician at the time) had decided to delve into progressive rock. Putting together several musicians, including three keyboardists, the album covers a variety of styles including funk, jazz, classical and even avant-garde music.

That album would include parts of this concert, as well as studio compositions. This show was recorded in November, 1973 as Todd toured the States on this debut line-up of Utopia-mostly musicians he recorded with at Secret Sound Studios in New York City-see A Wizard A True Star LP. Todd performs new songs that would end up on his album "Todd" (released in late 1974) as the soundboard recording is amazing.

Utopia started out as Rundgren’s own private King Crimson and the show starts out that way, too, diving right into extended, largely instrumental pieces ( Utopia Theme, The Ikon, Another Life ) that in retrospect has held up to the test of time pretty well. The intricacies of these compositions don’t bog the songs down thanks to Todd Rundgren’s flair for hooky melodies, and the solo wankery is kept in check. Utopia made an about-face with its fourth album Oops Wrong Planet and then it became Rundgren’s private Wings. So what if perhaps no one asked for a Utopia reunion? It’s a question that should have been asked. And Live at the Chicago Theatre i. e. he answer. Vinyl fans can wait just two weeks after that for the double-LP green discs in a gatefold jacket.
