This fairly obscure CD is a bit unusual for pianist Chucho Valdes (heard solo throughout) because he performs exclusively older material (most songs dating from the 1950s or before) and the renditions are quite concise. Only two of the dozen pieces exceed five minutes, and four are under three minutes in length. There are many beautiful melodies on the set including "Linda Cubana," "Guantanamera," "Son de la Loma," and Ernesto Lecuona's "La Comparsa. Valdes' loving variations uplift the delightful music.

Chucho Valdés is a afro-cuban jazz music album recording by CHUCHO VALDÉS released in 1970 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. CHUCHO VALDÉS - Chucho Valdés. Filed under Afro-Cuban Jazz By CHUCHO VALDÉS.

Chucho Valdés's piano-led recordings are studies in musical tension and dialogues. Of course much of the fire is locked into the percussion dialogues where patterned drumming inspires improvisation amid fairly strict rhythmic controls. Valdés runs away from the pack in spots, shuffling across the keyboard leaving a wake of chromatic color. But it is with his four original compositions that Valdés' opus enters the category of universal, especially with the album title-track, a follow-up of his recent album with Irakere, Yemayá.

Jesús Valdés Rodríguez, better known as Chucho Valdés (born October 9, 1941), is a Cuban pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger whose career spans over 50 years. An original member of the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, in 1973 he founded the group Irakere, one of Cuba's best-known Latin jazz bands. Both his father, Bebo Valdés, and his son, Chuchito, are pianists as well. He has won six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards.
