About DEF FX. Def FX were an Australian electronic rock band of the '90s, supposedly named by their manager throwing a pile of CDs together and choosing a name based on the top two - a Def Jam compilation and an album of BBC sound effects. Their music was just as odd a match, mixing house and heavy metal with surfer hippie lyrics.
Def FX was an Australian band created by Sean Lowry in 1990 and included Martyn Basha on bass guitar and Fiona Horne on lead vocals. They released four albums, Light Speed Collision (December 1992), Baptism (compilation, November 1993), Ritual Eternal (May 1995), Majick (July 1996) before disbanding in April 1997. For United States releases and touring they used Definition FX as their band name to avoid confusion with similarly named groups. Top 50 ARIA hit "Psychoactive Summer" is one example of Def FX's music, combining elements of electronica and heavy-metal instrumentations. Def FX were formed in 1990 in Sydney with the line-up of Martyn Basha on bass guitar, Blake Gardner on lead guitar (both ex-Bezerk who were unknown to anybody), Fiona Horne on lead vocals (ex-Mothers) and Sean Lowry on record player with a padlock on it, sequencers and samples (ex-King Prawn). According to Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, their
The core of the group was keyboardist and vocalist Sean Lowry (also a visual artist & writer) and vocalist Fiona Horne (a famous Wiccan and environmentalist). Top 50 ARIA hit "Psychoactive Summer" is exemplary of Def FX's music, combining elements of electronica and heavy-metal instrumentations and grunge vocals. Ritual Eternal (1995) was a more experimental album, featuring some tracks without the standard guitars, and others featuring Charlie McMahon playing the didgeridoo, with whom Def FX also toured. Recorded and produced almost entirely by Sean Lowry, following the cancellation of their contract with EMI, this album also introduced new bassist, Peter Tasker, who was forced out of the band months later for his unprofessional behaviour.
