Kimio Eto - Koto Music. It must have been Christmas of 1967 when I first saw the strange and slightly frightening cover of Kimio Eto’s Koto Music recording. It was a present from my Mom to Dad. He had spent some time in Japan during the Korean War, and had embraced the Japanese culture. I was too young to understand the stylized artwork, but over time came to greatly appreciate it, as well as the wonderful music on that record.

During his lifetime, Kimio Eto was considered to be Japan's foremost master of the koto, the ancient 13-string instrument of his native land. He, like so many, was attracted to the koto by both it's beautiful tonal qualities and remarkable versatility. In his youth, Eto studied the koto under the great master Michio Miyagi with his first composition for the instrument, Omoide, being published at just seventeen years. The LP's were ruined when an acquaintance played them on an extremely poor turntable. My only selfish gripe is that I want all of his previous recordings on CD with the quality of this album. I have a number of recordings of various fine koto players, and will continue to enjoy listening to them, but having a quality re-release of Eto Kimio was as exciting for me as the re-release of the complete recordings of William Kappell about ten years ago.

The Koto is the traditional 13 string Japanese instrument and Kimio Eto is widely regarded as its master. He began training on the instrument at the age of eight and composed his first work aged eleven. Amazingly he was blind from the age of five according to the sleeve notes and this makes this record all the more astonishing. Here on this él release we have an amalgamation of different bits of albums on one disc, Art of the Koto from 1962, Sound of the Koto from 1958 and Koto and Flute (with Bud Shank) from 1960 and they’re an interesting collection of tunes
