Jimmy Nolen (April 3, 1934 – December 18, 1983) was an American guitarist, known for his distinctive "chicken scratch" lead guitar playing in James Brown's bands. In its survey of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," the English magazine Mojo ranks Nolen number twelve. Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States, Nolen took up the guitar at the age of 14, teaching himself on a Harmony Acoustic guitar.

Before hooking up with Brown, Nolen paid his dues playing blues on the Chitlin’ Circuit and being the house guitarist for traveling acts coming through Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. Gear-wise, Nolen used a variety of tools during his career. The guitars he was most often spotted with included Gibson ES-175 and ES-5 Switchmaster hollowbodies, a Japanese-made Stratocaster copy called a Fresher Straighter, and a Gibson Les Paul Recording Model with single-coils. To achieve his signature sound, he ran the guitars through a Fender Twin Reverb with the treble cranked

Jimmy Nolen was James Brown’s most prolific guitar player. Many say he was the originator of chicken scratch, that which often characterizes Funk guitar playing. This reinforces what I said before about the Funk guitarist’s role as rhythm keeper, and not show off soloing guy. Watch him and New Mastersounds play a cover of James Brown’s obscure instrumental, In The Middle. He goes off in this one, and still keeps his solo tight and rhythmic. The Funk is as strong as it’s been in 40 years. There are plenty other super-talented, current Funk guitar players out there I haven’t mentioned. New players get inspired by the greats that have gone before, and get motivated to Get Up, Get Into and Get Involved. The Funk Will Set You Free.

Like saxophone player Maceo Parker, trombonist Fred Wesley and drummer s Clyde Stubblefield and John " Jabo " Starks, Nolen was a staple James Brown ' s band. He played with James from 1965 until 1970, when the entire band quit in response to Brown ’ s erratic behavior, withholding of wages, and demeaning treatment. g'sMenera (1972-1983).
