Hot Chip Made in the Dark (EMI, Astralwerks) Release: Feb. 5, 2008 (US) and Feb. 4, 2008 (UK) Recommendable to people who: Like Hot Chip, can handle drum machine versus real drums from time to time, like to dance, fan of krautrock, fans of funky electronic soul, experimental music. Sometimes a band comes along at just the right moment. Sometimes a band takes those moments and instead of just reveling in its present glory (cause, it’s not horrible to enjoy the fruits of your labor), it thinks of the future and how they plan to keep themselves going. It’s not the most danceable little bugger on the album nor the most attractive. But it has it’s moments. It has the Hot Chip cheekiness we’re all use to with the wacky vocal tweeks and 80’s geek outs. I swear I can hear a sound bite from the Labyrinth soundtrack in here some where.

Made in the Dark's main weakness might be its ballads, but that may just be in comparison to its many energetic moments, which are so addictive that it feels like a forced come-down whenever the band slows things down

Hot Chip are an English synth-pop band formed in London in 2000. The group consists of ts Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Al Doyle, Owen Clarke, and Felix Martin. They are supplemented by Rob Smoughton and Sarah Jones for live performances and studio recordings. Hot Chip primarily produces music in the synth-pop and alternative dance genres, drawing influences from house and disco.

Hot Chip's third album offers moments of sparkling pop-dance perfection - and some unexpectedly emotional material as well. What makes Made in the Dark great isn't any overarching concept, some grand theme that ties the whole thing together. In fact, the London group's third album is more fragmented than ever - the songwriting duties, split between singer/producers Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor, reveal a markedly varied set of influences and aesthetics. But the more time you spend with the album, the less that seems to matter. You come to value each song on its own merits

If Hot Chip’s debut was an ephemeral pleasure, its sophomore album, The Warning, was an impregnable revelation. The former was a feather landing on the grass; the latter an iron hammer clanging down on a hot anvil, throwing streams of incandescent sparks. Hot Chip’s hesitancy was obliterated, although the intimacy remained intact via the more con?dent but still sugary vocals. Look After Me was the sort of aching ballad that ?lled out Coming on Strong, girded by a sophisticated nighttime glide instead of a nursery-rhyme bounce. The band’s third album, Made in the Dark, is happily unsurprising, adding new depths of energy, color and con?dence to Hot Chip’s extant sound. It’s the band’s most rock-centric record so far, and also the band’s most e?ortlessly propulsive. Its glitchy grooves now cascade, rarely tangling themselves as they once did.

Made in the Dark, and I mean the album here, isn’t quite as good. Not like it did on The Warning, or at least, not like it did for me. The star of the album is obvious from the beginning: the only thing Made in the Dark has that The Warning really didn’t.
