Talk about Reggie Lucas - Survival Themes

Wow, such hostility! "Don't even LISTEN to this record"?? Do you have, like, some sort of vendetta against it, trying to retaliate against it for some weird reason, by convincing people not to even go near it? Let THEM listen and decide! Um, you might not realize that "fusion-funk stuff" is still popular among quite a few of us cratediggers and non-DJ musicheads in 2018. But obviously you don't like that genre, so why not tell us what style were you HOPING this record would be?Personally, I've never been too impressed with the first two tracks here; they sound like an attempt to go "R&B-fusion lite" for airplay's sake. As for "The Barefoot Song", yes, Lucas' solo goes on a couple of minutes too long and is not terribly inspired-- they should have pushed him to do a few more takes. He did better soloing in live shows with Miles, when he was actually allowed to do some, which was not often enough. But the tune itself is fine, and Anthony Jackson's solo-- damn. Especially near the end of it, he does a boatload of sophisticated stuff with double-stops-- that's two harmonized notes played on the bass, for those not familiar. It's extraordinary that he already had such extensive harmonic knowledge in his head at the age of twenty-three.The "Survival Themes", I like a lot. "Season of the Monsoon" is a soulful, almost mournful statement that reminded me of early-'70s exploratory Santana when I first heard it. The next two tracks are pleasant, contemplative guitar-and-percussion features that feature the kind of chording I wish Lucas had included in his "Barefoot" solo. And then for the finale: "Electric Reflection" seems to be the Pete Cosey-ish distortion-pedal freakout (over Mtume's congas) that Lucas never got to do in Miles' band because, well, that was Cosey's assigned territory. It's high-volume wailing catharsis for when you need such things (and don't we all, from time to time?)Anyway, folks, this is by no means a perfect album, but there's some fine tasty stuff here, and I recommend that YOU decide for yourself.

Don't buy or even listen to this record - this is an embarrassingly amateurish attempt to play some fusion/funk stuff, that was popular in 1975. Many well known names and bunch of dull tracks. Worst of all, Reggie Lucas haven't improvised well. You can hear it clearly in "The Barefoot Song" with its clumsy guitar solo, but the title "Survival Themes" suite is a real embarrassment, that sounds like a house jam played by a teen musician.
