Divertimento for String Orchestra S. 13 B. 18 is a three-movement work composed by Béla Bartók in 1939, scored for full orchestral strings. Paul Sacher, a Swiss conductor, patron, impresario, and the founder of the chamber orchestra Basler Kammerorchester, commissioned Bartók to compose the Divertimento, which is now known to be the pair’s last collaborative work.

Roman Simovic - leader LSO String Ensemble. Tchaikovsky composed his Serenade in the autumn of 1880, at the same time as the ‘1812’ Overture. After several years spent travelling in Europe in the aftermath of his disastrous marriage, he had finally returned to Russia. The LSO was formed in 1904 as London’s first selfgoverning orchestra and has been resident orchestra at the Barbican since 1982. Valery Gergiev became Principal Conductor in 2007 following in the footsteps of Hans Richter, Sir Edward Elgar, Sir Thomas Beecham, André Previn, Claudio Abbado and Michael Tilson Thomas, among others. Sir Colin Davis had previously held the position since 1995 and from 2007 became the LSO’s first President since Leonard Bernstein.

The LSO String Ensemble, led by LSO leader Roman Simovic, gives magnificent performances of Schubert (arr Mahler) String Quartet No 14 Death and the Maiden and Shostakovich Chamber Symphony in C minor. This is the second LSO String Ensemble release on LSO Live, following the acclaimed recording of Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings and Bartók Divertimento. Schuberts Death and the Maiden Quartet, heard here in Mahlers stunning arrangement, is one of the most popular pieces in the repertoire
