San Francisco Bay Blues" is an American folk song and is generally considered to be the most famous composition by Jesse Fuller. Fuller first recorded the song in 1954 (released 1955) for a small label called World Song. The song was brought into wider popularity in the early 1960s by club performances by Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Bob Dylan, and Jim Kweskin.

In 1975, the city of San Francisco called for major budget cuts to extracurricular activities in local schools, to which legendary promoter Bill Graham responded with the . Benefit concert, or Students Need Athletics, Culture, and Kicks. This was Graham’s first large, outdoor, multi-artist stadium concert, and it drew more than 50,000 people with an incredible bill that stretched on for over five hours of music, beginning with some early morning funk from Tower of Power and Graham Central Station. Bob Dylan was in the middle of a tour at the time and couldn’t make the show, but Neil Young came out near the end of the Dead’s set to sing Forever Young with them. I got a letter her from Bob, Young said before beginning the tune. It’s too big to read, so we’re going to have to play and sing it to you. (You can see video of the performance above. Despite regularly packing their set full of cover songs, the Grateful Dead never did a single Neil Young song in concert
