The Weed Tree is the second album from Espers, released on Locust Music in 2005. It was, for the most part, a covers album, although it did feature the original song "Dead King". The artists covered were The Durutti Column, Nico, Michael Hurley and Blue Öyster Cult. It also included two traditional songs drawing influence from recordings by Bert Jansch and The Famous Jug Band. The songs were performed in the psychedelic folk style of the band.

Espers : The Weed Tree. I heard Espers and Animal Collective at around the same time. While Animal Collective’s Sung Tongs blew a fuse in my mind with its psychedelic campfire songs, Espers’ self-titled debut quieted my mind with a different, more serene version of what some people consider the same genre

Less murky than their self-titled debut, Tree is a bright, fluid, and promising collection of six covers and one original that sees the group poised for an explosive (quietly, that is) full-length record in the near future. The Espers mine the traditional ("Rosemary Lane," "Black Is the Color") with grace and reverence, keeping the framework steeped in enough British folk acoustics that when a keyboard appears out of nowhere it's not at all intrusive; rather it's the lightening bolt in a gray sky that illuminates the crows below.
Only for completionists (0%). This cover album came out halfway between Esper's two albums, partly to soothe the fans' impatience. Already by this time Espers had grown to the sextet that will record the superb II album, and although a cover album, it is fairly representative of the group's sound
