III is Espers' fourth full-length album. It was released on October 20, 2009. The band (known for bleak and melancholic music) has stated in a press release that they've "attempted to create something that would be perhaps cheery at times, though that mark may have been missed.

On III opener "I Can't See Clear", something's different. The tempo has crept up a couple of notches. So what we've got here is Espers' move toward simplicity and directness, a look that doesn't suit them especially well. Those arrangements are a big part of the problem. Weeks has numbers at his disposal- the first time I saw Espers live, they peaked at 12 people onstage. And on III, he apparently can't resist using those numbers. So moments that would've worked fine with just an acoustic guitar or a murmuring organ get both, plus a spindly violin or a flanged-out electric guitar or some kind of mandolin thing.

Like much of this unostentatiously produced album, it could have been recorded at any time during the last 40 years and will probably still beguile four decades hence. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Licence.

The album clearly fails to find the equilibrium or comfortable midway point between Espers’s debut and II that it seems to be seeking, nor does it make a strong case that such equilibrium is even desirable. At best, it’s a strong set of tracks that ultimately lack the cumulative force of those of the band’s previous two full-lengths.
