As a result, Toto was less well positioned than most to come off a big debut album with the follow-up, and Hydra was unusually dependent on its leadoff single, "9. Maybe it was a tribute to the female lead on the old Get Smart TV show, but many listeners didn't get a song with a chorus that went, "Oh, 99, I love you," and the single stalled in the bottom half of the Top 40.

The music on this album is more serious than their previous release, but the performances are what you would expect from a crack group of session musicians, which were what the members of Toto originally (and still are) did - great. Unlike the self-titled debut album, Hydra is a serious rock effort and deserves to be in the collection of anyone who enjoys that genre, especially if that enjoyment encompasses the late 70's and early 80's.
