Hip Hop Is Dead is the eighth studio album by American rapper Nas, released December 19, 2006 on Def Jam Recordings. His first album for the label, it was co-financed by Nas's previous label, Columbia Records, which once distributed for Def Jam. The album's title was inspired by Nas's view of the music industry and the state of hip hop music at the time. The album features appearances from Nas’ then wife Kelis, Kanye West, Jay-Z, will. am, Snoop Dogg, The Game and Chrisette Michele, among others.

The title Hip Hop is Dead stirred up some controversy, as many felt Nas was aiming at Southern rappers who were rising in popularity around this time, primarily with less lyrical crunk and snap music. Nas clarified his message in an interview with MTV: When I say ‘hip-hop is dead’, basically America is dead. There is no political voice. Music is dead Our way of thinking is dead, our commerce is dead. Everything in this society has been done. The album was also nominated in the Best Rap Album category in 2008 but lost to Kanye West’s Graduation. Hip Hop Is Dead Q&A.

Hip-hop isn't dead and neither is Nas but both could use a shot of life. Hip Hop is dead but if you truly don't understand that quote then you will not enjoy this album for what it is. The intro is exciting and draws you into the album and it only gets better from there. The track who killed it is definitely the weakest track on here. I like the concept but the song is ehhhh lol.

Hip-hop isn't dying because Nas hates it; it's dying because not enough people love it. If that sounds corny or offensive, well, there's the rub, and Hip Hop Is Dead is made for you. If you lecture on rap forums all day, post daily pics on your blog of Lil' Wayne kissing people, wonder why we write about hip-hop on this site, or just want to know what the best rapper alive really sounds like, listen to this album. For everyone else, the standard Nas disclaimer: Hip Hop Is Dead is not Illmatic. In the end, Hip Hop Is Dead is the album I'll give to people in 20 years when they ask who Nas was. More than Illmatic, it represents the real Nas- not the ideal- the MC with all the skill, all the rhymes, and all the insight who sabotaged himself with bad decisions. There aren't too many here, which is why I'll recommend it. Whether he will revive hip-hop or not is for history to decide; I'm not sure it needs reviving.
