Live at the Village Vanguard is a 1967 big band jazz album recorded by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and released on the Solid State Records label.

The second recording by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra is the equal of the first. Most memorable here are "Little Pixie," Fats Waller's "Willow Tree," and particularly, the spirited "Don't Git Sassy.

Solid State SS-18016. On April 13,2009, the University of Hartford presented Jones with a Doctorate Degree for his musical accomplishments, Jones recorded more than 60 albums under his own name, and countless others as a sideman, including Cannonball Adderleys celebrated album Somethin Else. On May 19,1962, he played piano as actress Marilyn Monroe sang her famous Happy Birthday, Mr. President song to U. S. president John F. Kennedy.

The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra was little more than a year old when this album was recorded live at the Village Vanguard, which was the band's Monday night home for every week of its existence. Jones almost single-handedly brought the big band into the modern age with this origanization. Swung hard by Mel Lewis's drums, the band sailed through the complex charges of Jones and Bob Brookmeyer with panache. Exclusive discount for Prime members.
