Johannes Ockeghem's Requiem is a beautiful example of the plainchant mass and is the earliest surviving polyphonic Mass for the Dead. It was most likely written in 1461 and originally consisted of the Introit, Kyrie eleison, Graduale, Tractus, and the Offertorium. All the other texts were probably sung in unembellished plainchant, following normal church practice. In this pre-Tridentine setting, the Requiem appears truncated, but to call this performance a reconstruction or a completion is not quite accurate since Ockeghem's work was as complete as he deemed necessary.
I included this disc in a "blind Ockeghem tasting" with five early music performers of some fame, all of them strongly biased toward the English voice color of the Tallis Scholars, Clerks' Group, Orlando Consort, etc. (those groups were all included in the test). The Ensemble Organum disc was the unanimous selection as the most potent and profound. I eliminated the plainchant segments, by the way, which would have given the identity of Marcel Peres away.

Performer: Ensemble Organum; conducted by Marcel Pérès. Johannes Ockeghem (c. 1420-1497) - Mort, tu as navré de ton dart - (Death, you have wounded with your dart) Arranged by Raaf Hekkema Calefax Reed Quintet - Oliver Boekhorn - Raaf Hekkema - Ivar Berix - Jelte Althius - Alban Wesly. Johannes Ockeghem (attributed): Deo gratias. From the album Utopia Triumphans: The Great Polyphony of the Renaissance. Attributed to the Franco-Flemish composer Johannes Ockeghem (c. 1410-1497), a master of the byzantine art of Renaissance polyphony, Deo gratias is an extreme example of a kind of composition called a canon. The underlying principle is the strict imitation of the initial melody by a number of subsequently entering voices.
Johannes Ockeghem (also Jean de, Jan; surname Okeghem, Ogkegum, Okchem, Hocquegam, Ockegham; other variant spellings are also encountered) (1410/1425 – February 6, 1497) was the most famous composer of the Franco-Flemish School in the last half of the 15th century, and is often considered the most influential composer between Guillaume Dufay and Josquin des Prez. In addition to being a renowned composer, he was also an honored singer, choirmaster, and teacher.
