The Birthday Party is a 1980 album by Australian rock band The Boys Next Door (later reissued under the band name The Birthday Party).

Prayers On Fire is the first LP by The Birthday Party and to this day it remains one of the most disturbing pieces of music ever made. Beginning with tribal drumming and chanting, complete with a menacing bass-line on the opener Zoo-Music Girl and all the way to the sickeningly distorted parody of a blues song Kathy’s Kisses, the album works like a ride to a morbid party in Hell, happening in a deranged maniac’s mind. Overall, this album is definitely not for everyone, unless you want to torture other people with it, in which case, there more people hear it the merrier.

The birthday party are not for everyone. They can be quite abrasive. To me the stand out tracks are zoo music girl, nick the stripper, cry and king ink. Give these songs a listen and see if this is your kind of party. There we go. Despite this, this is one damn damn fine album. It somehow manages to straddle the line between their earlier Boys Next Door records, their major Stooges influence, AND their later gradual metamorphosis into 80's goth rock heroes (as seen on Mutiny and The Bad Seed. The good massively outweighs the bad in this case, though, and I highly recommend this work to anyone who has not heard the Birthday Party before. A very good introduction to either Hee Haw or Mutiny/The Bad Seed, and probably the best place to start with the Birthday Party.
