Luther Ingram’s Week continues with his rare debut on koko label, 2nd contribution from Groovy Emmanuel. Luther, one of the greatest talents of his generation first got his start doing rougher, more fragile soul tunes but by the time of these 70s recordings, he’d really found his voice and hit a more confident, more sensuous style that could easily go head to head with Al Green or any of his southern soul contemporaries.

(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right" is a song written by Stax Records songwriters Homer Banks, Carl Hampton, and Raymond Jackson. Originally written for The Emotions, it has been performed by many singers, most notably by Luther Ingram, whose original recording topped the R&B chart for four weeks and rose to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. Billboard ranked it as the No. 16 song for 1972.

Luther Thomas Ingram (November 30, 1937 - March 19, 2007) was an R&B soul singer and songwriter. Born in Jackson, Tennessee, his songs appeared in the pop and R & B charts, even though he worked for a small label, Koko Records, owned by his manager and producer, Johnny Baylor. Koko and Baylor were closely associated with the Memphis-based Stax Records label during the height of its commercial success.

But even though it was far and away his biggest pop success, Ingram had been making records since 1956 (with the doo wop act the Gardenias, whose sole single was produced by Ike Turner) and he was a frequent presence on the rhythm & blues circuit from 1965 onward. Ingram's best and best-known work was cut for Koko Records from 1966 through 1978, and If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right: The Best of Luther Ingram collects 17 songs from Ingram's tenure at Koko; if it isn't a complete overview of his career, this is a solid and thoroughly enjoyable celebration.
