Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin, BB 82, O. 9 (S. 3) - Agitato: Again, the Frightened Tramps Discuss How To Eliminate the Mandarin. However, the polished performance of ‘The Miraculous Mandarin’ was too tame for my tastes. Pierre Boulez and the New York Philharmonic are much better on Sony Classics (in a terrific value set that includes all the major orchestral works, and a superlative recording of ‘Duke Bluebeard’s Castle’ with Sigmund Nimsgern and Tatiana Troyanos). And, for a really bold live performance of ‘Mandarin’, that really unleashes the power of this fantastic score, check out the Budapest Music Centre disc (from conductor Peter Eotvos).
