Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin - Dance Suite - Contrasts (Live). Yefim Bronfman, Zsolt-Tihamér Visontay, Mark Van De Viel, Philharmonia Voices, Philharmonia Orchestra, Esa-Pekka Salonen. Recorded live in 2011 as part of their critically praised Infernal Dance season, the Philharmonia Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen explore three works by Bartók: the chamber piece Contrasts and orchestral works Dance Suite and The Miraculous Mandarin. Contrasts is one of the composer's most imaginative forays into the world of chamber music and is his only chamber work involving a woodwind instrument, the clarinet, since the piece was commissioned by the "King of Swing" Benny Goodman. kHz, 24-bit PCM – Signum Records Studio Masters.

The Philharmonia Orchestra is a British orchestra based in London. It was founded in 1945 by Walter Legge, a classical music record producer for EMI. Among the conductors who worked with the orchestra in its early years were Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Arturo Toscanini; of the Philharmonia's younger conductors, the most important to its development was Herbert von Karajan, who though never formally chief conductor was closely associated with the orchestra in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Esa-Pekka Salonen, principal conductor since 2008, is due to serve until 2021, when Santtu-Matias Rouvali is scheduled to succeed him. The Philharmonia has had many celebrated players in its ranks and has commissioned more than 100 compositions. It gives more than 160 concerts a year, tours widely, and from its inception has been known for its many recordings.

Recorded as part of their critically praised Infernal Dance season, the Philharmonia Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen explore three contrasting works by Bela Bartok - the chamber piece Contrasts and the orchestral works Dance Suite and The Miraculous Mandarin. Contrasts is one of Bartok's most imaginative forays into the world of chamber music while Dance Suite is a rhapsodic collection of folk inspired tunes. The Miraculous Mandarin is raw, dangerous, exotic and elemtnal.

Photograph: Hiroyuki Ito/Getty Images. Most music doesn’t suit safety, and the stakes are always higher when an orchestra knows it is being recorded live – no studio retakes, no patching (probably). This Bartók disc comes from the Philharmonia’s 2011 Infernal Dance series – and the now-or-never concert adrenaline is palpable. There’s unflinching attack in the savage pantomime The Miraculous Mandarin, deadpan wit in the gentler Dance Suite, and it’s all delivered with that unnervingly meticulous, steely focus that conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen gets from the Philharmonia
