Shangri La is the second studio album by English indie rock artist Jake Bugg. The album was produced by Rick Rubin and named after his studio in Malibu, California, where recording took place in the summer of 2013. The album was released on 18 November 2013 and was met with mixed reactions from fans and critics. The first single "What Doesn't Kill You" was announced and released from Shangri La on 23 September 2013

What sort of music would you expect a teenager from Nottingham make after a UK number one debut album, a million in record sales worldwide and a sold out tour of the US? One thing’s for certain: Jake Bugg is miles away from the Clifton council estate he grew up in – 6000 miles, to be exact, as he’s been in Rick Rubin’s Shangri La studio in Malibu. The fact that he’s named his new album after the place is a fitting reflection of his current star-studded lifestyle

On Bugg’s second album, Rick Rubin oversees an expanding sonic palette and a tougher sound; the punk-fired What Doesn’t Kill You and grungy country rock of All Your Reasons push up against MacDougal Street serenades like Pine Trees, an alienated epistle that could’ve been cut in a winter cabin. At times his folkier moments can be a touch too comfy

Shangri La feels more grown up and more rounded; where Bugg’s first album had some truly killer songs, Shangri La offers a few just as strong. There's the pugnacious fit Slumville Sunrise, the punky What Doesn’t Kill You, the summery lament Me and You, and the catchy and radio-friendly Messed Up Kids. A handful of tracks demand more time to plumb their depths, like the roadhouse rager Kingpin and the brokenhearted Pine Trees. Shangri La Jake Bugg. pushed homeboy Jake Bugg to the top of its charts in 2012, in the . a few fans of Bugg’s vintage-flavored, Dylan-meets-skiffle rock ’n’ roll took the young Jake to their collective bosom, impressed with his playing skills and passion. Bugg’s Dylanesque tones both hurt and helped him.

Jake Bugg's eponymous 2012 debut was enough of a success to push him into neo-stardom across the Atlantic Ocean. He never had an actual hit in America - the album did get to 75 on the Billboard 200, though - but his reputation was strong, strong enough to gain the attention of Rick Rubin, who signed up to record the young British singer/songwriter's sophomore album at the producer's home studio.

Smug, smarmy, metropolitan critics might declare the album generic and derivative, but the kid undeniably has tunes-more tunes than such people have ever written even in their wildest rock star fantasies. Shangri La is basically more of the same, and for many of his fans, that’ll be more than enough.
