The Unforgettable Fire was U2's first studio collaboration with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. There were several significant re-issues including one in October 1996 as part of the Island Master series and one as part of the MFSL Ultradisc series in both the 12" vinyl and 5" CD formats with a slightly longer version of 4th Of July. Other unusual releases from around the world included a Mexican release on the Bertelsmann label as part of the Rockollector series. The album was certified multi-platinum by the RIAA with 3 million units sold. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, The Unforgettable Fire reached N. 4 on the album charts and stayed in the charts a total of 3 weeks. It was also selected as Best Album at Ireland's Music Industry Awards and in the Hot Press Reader's Poll, it was voted the No. 1 album by readers.
U2's fourth album, The Unforgettable Fire, was released in remastered form in 2009 to mark 25 years since the album's original release in October 1984. Recorded at Slane Castle, Ireland, The Unforgettable Fire was the first U2 album to be produced by Brian Eno and Danny Lanois, and spawned two top 10 UK singles - 'Pride (In The Name Of Love)' and 'The Unforgettable Fire'

Ultimately, The Unforgettable Fire would play out as a transitional record for this band, and over time would become regarded as the album that had to come before the success the band would enjoy with their next album, the instant classic "The Joshua Tree". It would also serve as a measuring stick of just how far this band could go and give them something to build back on for the future.
In many ways, U2 took their fondness for sonic bombast as far as it could go on War, so it isn't a complete surprise that they chose to explore the intricacies of the Edge's layered, effects-laden guitar on the follow-up, The Unforgettable Fire. Working with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, U2 created a dark, near-hallucinatory series of interlocking soundscapes that are occasionally punctuated by recognizable songs and melodies. In such a setting, the band both flourishes and flounders, creating some of their greatest music, as well.
So The Unforgettable Fire isn't U2's biggest commercial success (that would be The Joshua Tree) or its most rewarding artistic coup (Achtung Baby), but without it those records would not exist. It's a transitional album of the highest magnitude. The hits- "Pride", "Bad"- still hit, and even its sometimes-derided abstractions like "Promenade" and "Elvis Presley and America" contain enough mystery to keep unraveling 25 years later. The opener tells of an ambiguous return.
