A collection of broadcast performances from New York's Savoy Ballroom and Roseland Ballroom 1939-40, when Ella Fitzgerald led the Chick Webb Band. These swinging instrumentals feature solos from Bobby Stark, Sandy Williams, and Tommy Fulford. In spite of Chick Webb's absence, these tracks show Fitzgerald to be an inspirational leader, and the band jumps! Dubbed "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the US for more than half a century. Just to let you know Ella Fitzgerald does not sing on any of these 24 tracks. It's her orchestra in name only: she inherited it after Chick Web died. Despite the misleading title, "Ella Fitzgerald and her famous orchestra", all the tracks swing uptempo and are a fine representation of swing band music at the end of the thirties.
