Read how Guns N' Roses' two brilliant 'Use Your Illusion' LPs grew out of one of the band's most chaotic periods. In April 1990, the classic lineup of Guns N’ Roses played its final show. The occasion was the nationally televised Farm Aid concert, a disastrous set that included, among several bizarre highlights, Steven Adler drunkenly belly-flopping in the general direction of his drum set only to miss by four feet, and Axl Rose ending the live broadcast with a climactic Good fuckin’ night. Slash would later liken Use Your Illusion I and II to the Beatles’ White Album (though maybe not as good ), a titanic mix of gritty ragers, passionate rock-opera ballads and decadent screeds – from the failed-relationship triptych of Don’t Cry, November Rain and Estranged to the rock-critic indictment Get in the Ring to the misogynistic double-header of . Bad Obsession and Back Off Bitch.

With the new lineup intact, Guns N' Roses started putting together the disc in 1990, spending nearly a year on the recording. The band made use of numerous studios, including A&M, Record Plant, Studio 56, Image Recording, Conway Studios and Metalworks Recording Studios. Ever the perfectionists, the band also mixed 21 tracks with engineer/producer Bob Clearmountain, but later scrapped the mixes, starting from scratch with Bill Price handling the mixing. The first song to arrive came from the Use Your Illusion II album. The propulsive rocker "You Could Be Mine" was used for their soundtrack of the film Terminator 2: Judgment Day after Arnold Schwarzenegger personally invited the band to dinner at his home to negotiate a deal.

Had Use Your Illusion II been combined with Use Your Illusion I, keeping only the best material while dropping the filler, it would have been one of the best rock albums ever recorded. Instead, great songs like "Civil War," "14 Years," "Estranged," and "So Fine" compete with the inexcusable "Get in the Ring" and the well-intentioned but off-target cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door. There's no point to the second version of "Don't Cry," either. On the other hand, when Guns N' Roses were good, they.

Use Your Illusion I - Guns N' Roses. After such a masterpiece it took almost 4 years to come up with something worth releasing to already hungry audience. And the boys blasted into the scene again with a double album full of hard rock illusions.
