Youth Lagoon follows his heartfelt 2011 debut The Year of Hibernation with an album that is bigger, bolder, and more emotionally resonant, thanks to production from Ben Allen. Trevor Powers' project is firmly in the lineage of bands like Mercury Rev, Sparklehorse, and Modest Mouse. These qualities are about the only things that haven't changed for Youth Lagoon on Wondrous Bughouse. This record broadens Powers' musical and lyrical scope into something universal in a literal and figurative sense, evoking the cosmos, heaven, and hell. But Powers sounds curious and awestruck rather than naïve, someone who explores this lush and frightening soundworld instead of explaining it.

Took me a while to notice, but my vinyl copy of this does not have the track "Pelican Man" despite being listed on both the cover and the label. Also "Attic Doctor" and "The Bath" are B1 and B2 respectively despite being listed as A2 and B1 as above.
Youth Lagoon's second album, Wondrous Bughouse, lives up to the first part of its name: the sheer amount of sounds Trevor Powers packs into these songs certainly inspire wonder.

Wondrous Bughous is the follow-up to his widely acclaimed 2011 release The Year of Hibernation. Powers says this album spawned from what he describes as becoming more ''fascinated by the human psyche and where the spiritual world meets the physical world. Powers describes the writing process of his first album as a way for his mind to communicate with his body, not the other way around. It seems the same can be said for Wondrous Bughouse.
Wondrous Bughouse doesn’t expand Youth Lagoon’s sound so much as pour neon-colored Kool-Aid onto it until it’s diluted to a point where it’s almost difficult to hold onto much of anything in these songs. I prefer his first album Year of Hibernation more but regardless this is an absolutely magical album. Or consider a donation?
