For this hybrid SACD of famous organ works by . Bach, Masaaki Suzuki plays the restored Schnitger-Hinz organ in the Martinikerk (Martin's Church), in Groningen, one of the most celebrated instruments in the Netherlands and one which dates back to Bach's time. Its bright, Baroque sonorities and Suzuki's historically informed interpretations give these performances a compelling sense of authenticity and period style. Yet he includes two sparkling virtuoso performances in the Fantasia in G major and the Prelude and Fugue in E minor, which keep the album from being too soft and subdued. BIS' super audio sound is crisp and detailed, which is no mean feat in a church recording.

Before releasing his first album of Bach's organ works, Masaaki Suzuki had recorded the composer's complete sacred cantatas, as well as the large-scale choral works and much of the music for harpsichord. His achievements in these fields obscured the fact that Suzuki originally trained as an organist, and began working as such already at the age of twelve.

Prelude and Fugue in G major, BWV 541) - Fugue 03. (Chorale prelude 'Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier', BWV 730) - Chorale prelude 'Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier', BWV 730 04. (Concerto in D minor, BWV 596, after Antonio Vivaldi (RV565)) - I. II. Grave III. Fugue 05. (Concerto in D minor, BWV 596, after Antonio Vivaldi (RV565)) - IV. Largo e spiccato 06. (Concerto in D minor, BWV 596, after Antonio Vivaldi (RV565)) - V. 07. (Chorale partita on 'Sei gegret, Jesu gtig' or 'O Jesu, du edle Gabe', BWV 768 ) - Chorale 08.

Masaaki Suzuki's new CD of Bach organ music had the rare distinction for an organ recital of being named the Gramophone CD of the month. Freeman-Attwood wrote: "Of all the current doyens of modern Bach performance, Masaaki Suzuki knows no limits to his explorations. Suzuki plays this large work in a lyrical, flowing way. The performance is dramatic, but its appeal lies more in its flow and musicality than in sheer volume of sound. The other grand work on this CD is the final track, the Prelude and Fugue in E Minor, BWV 548. This is a dramatic, almost orchestral large-scale work, with the fugue the longest Bach ever composed for solo organ.

Bach Collegium Japan directed by Masaaki Suzuki; Yukari Nonoshita - soprano; Robin Blaze - counter-tenor; Makoto Sakurada - tenor; Stephan MacLeod - bass; First - Masaaki Suzuki introduces new bass here - Stephan MacLeod replaces Peter Kooij. This is first time when they co-operate on Bach Cantatas Project - however some of us might know their first joint effort Monteverdi's "Vespro" - recording that I like very much! Let's see what comes with that change.
