BRAINTICKET is a Krautrock, Progressive Rock artist from Switzerland. I remembered back in 2000 a brand new Brainticket album, first time since Voyage in 1982. Since that time Joel Vandroogenbroeck recorded tons of library albums on the Coloursound label. By 1984 he moved to Mexico (as he was sick and tired of shoveling snow in the Swiss Winters) where he's lived ever since.

Brainticket Psychonaut on 12" Vinyl. Brainticket is the brainchild of Joel Vandroogenbroeck, a Belgian based in Switzerland who grew up studying classical piano before switching to jazz. He received the Art Tatum prize as youngest jazz pianist at the tender age of fifteen, and was soon touring around Europe and Africa. By 1967, Joel was still playing jazz but he found new inspiration in the sounds emanating from German krautrock artists Amon Duul II, Can and Tangerine Dream. The album came with a warning label that insisted you should only listen once a day to this record. Your brain might be destroyed, which led to the album being banned in several countries including the USA. From then on, Brainticket’s reputation as a band of experimentalists at the forefront of underground, avant-garde music had been solidified.

Brainticket disintegrated after the recording of Cottonwoodhill. Some members ended up in the more conventional hard rock group Toad (that group also featured future Island member Benjamin Jäger, Island, the group who did the album Pictures in 1977). Joel Vandroogenbroeck simply hired some new musicians with a totally different approach. Each Brainticket album has plenty to offer. The disturbing bad trip of Cottonwoodhill, the pleasant vibe of Psychonaut, the Egyptian-themed Celestial Ocean, and the pair of underrated early '80s albums, Adventure (1980) and Voyage (1982) that was a great combination of world music and electronic. I can understand why an album like Psychonaut had to happen. 4 people found this helpful.
