Another German prog rock band from the mid to late '70s, this is their debut album. Basically another band in the ELOY, GROBSCHNITT, NOVALIS vein, and like those bands (save NOVALIS), RAMSES sung in English. One of my all time favourites is the album "La Leyla" (1976) from RAMSES, this is their best effort from the three records they released.

Ramses (5). La Leyla ‎(LP, Album). Valentim de Carvalho. PSKY - 002. Portugal. Ramses (5). La Leyla ‎(LP, Album, Promo). At first glance most people believe the Annuit Coeptis release of La Leyla is nothing but a reissue of the Sky record. However, AC 1002 is a different record than Sky 002. The first track on side 2 of AC 1002 is titled Noise. The first track on side 2 of Sky 002 is titled War. The music is similar on each version and the track lengths are identical, but the lyrics are entirely different. The B1 track is unique to each release of this lp. Two different recordings and two different songs.

Recorded and mixed at Connys Tonstudio, Neunkirchen - September, October 1975.

Hanover, Germany based RAMSES were formed in 1972 as RAMSES II. The next year was spent touring and performing original pieces and cover versions. This was also a period of several personnel changes. Their big break occurred in 1975 when they signed with the fledgeling Sky RECORDS and shortened their name to RAMSES. They recorded their first and most acclaimed album "LA LEYLA" in barely a week in Conny Plank's studio. It measured up to the contemporary works of ELOY, JANE and NOVALIS among others

Ramses was another one of those mid '70s German prog rock bands that are not a million miles away from groups like Novalis or Eloy. In 1976, they released La Leyla on the Sky label (it was the second release on the label). It was also released on the American label Annuit Coeptis, with the same cover artwork, although the band logo is now red, instead of blue. If you don't have a turntable, you can get this album (with "War") as part of a two-for-one CD reissue that includes this album with their 1978 followup Eternity Rise (also recommended). Anyways, La Leyla might not make your list as one of the top German prog albums, it's still worth having.
