Originally released in 2009, Ward: Consort Music for Five and Six Viols has been re-issued as part of Linns ECHO series; a second chance to enjoy the best of the labels award-winning catalogue. The award-winning ensemble has been applauded across the globe for its moving performances and is recognised as the most exciting viol consort active on the world scene today. you will want to listen frequently and be transported to that wonderful deep calming place that it takes you to. For those interested, I also highly recommend this album of Ward's madrigals (sans voices, there are no entire albums of Ward's sung texts). John Ward Consort Music: John Ward, Rose Consort of Viols, John Bryan: Music It too is most worthy of your attention.

Phantasm's bold and passionate style of consort playing does full justice to John Ward's consort music for five and six viols, recorded here complete for the very first time. Recorded in the warm acoustic of Wadham College Chapel, Oxford this recording reveals works that seduce the listener with lyrical melodies and music of great charm. Phantasm's ability to produce such a richly expressive unified sound allows the subtlety and elegance in Ward's music to be fully realized. John Ward was a noted madrigalist and contemporary of Orlando Gibbons. Linn Records is proud to announce that six Linn recordings have been nomiated for the 2011 International Classical Music Awards. JOHN WARD (CA. 1589~1638) Consort music for five and six viols. John Ward (ca. 1589~1638) has to put up with a name of such unadorned plainness that it is hard to believe he was a leading light in Jacobean viol consort music. Though wrongly demeaned on occasion today as a mere "amateur" composer (because he didn't hold a court or ecclesiastic appointment), connoisseurs in the seventeenth century were in no doubt about his stature

Here we have the result: a mix of consort fantasias with verse anthems, in which the consort is joined by the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford, under Daniel Hyde’s direction. You should know what to expect, assuming you’re familiar with that previous release. Ward’s wealthy patron, Henry Fanshawe, was an Italophile, but presumably preferred Roman musical models to more forward looking Venetian ones, for Ward.
