This version is the most complete original recording of the masterpiece of the composer, which has never before been published in its entirety, did not fit on the plates and CD. Persepolis - was specially written for the Festival of Arts and Music in Shiraz, Iran, in 1971, commissioned by the Iranian Shah. The electronic composition lasting about 60 minutes was broadcast through 59 loudspeakers on the ruins of the palace complex of the ancient city of Persepol, located 60 km north of Shiraz.

My best Persepolis listening experiences sit uncomfortably between misophonia and ASMR. On the couch, head tilted back, pressure on the neck, pulses of red in the peripherals. It’s a bit Jacob’s Ladder-esque, as though the music coerces you to relive traumatic life experiences, warped and sinister, most of which may not have ever happened. Here, we lie in the shadow of a shadow of a shadow. Most of us will never know the full scope of Xenakis’ Polytopes: live performances blending sound, like, structure, and colors. So, we’re left to wonder. As we wonder, our thoughts don’t evade the onslaught.

Persephassa is a piece for six percussionists composed by Iannis Xenakis in 1969. The piece was commissioned jointly by the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française (ORTF) and the Shiraz-Persepolis Festival of Arts (presided by the Empress of Iran), held at the historic site of Persepolis (Gluck 2007, 22). The title is one of the variant names of the goddess Persephone, Proserpina, and also refers to the names "Perseus", "Perceval", and "Persepolis" (Gaillard 1971, 751)
