Performed by the New London Chamber Choir and the Critical Band with director James Wood, "A Colone" (1977) is an evocative ten-minute work for male or female choir with instrumental ensemble, in which the chorus melodiously sings in note groups that restrict their range to less than an octave, and in syncopated, dance-like rhythms that fit the accents and (long-short). patterns of fifth-century BC Greece. The accompanying brass instruments employ distinct attacks and occasional slow sliding tones, and the low strings tremolos, to create a compellingly simple, ancient texture. closed-tone clusters, all of these gestures creating eerie timbres like those of a Xenakis instrumental ensemble. 1981's "Serment" comprises a ten-minute text for mixed choir is based on the Hippocratic Oath sworn by doctors throughout the world.

This enterprising Hyperion release is a great success, showing just how varied – and unintimidating – Xenakis’s music can be. The performances are nothing short of phenomenal in their technical assurance and emotional power, and the recording (made at St Silas, North London) is also something special, giving the singers just the right degree of space and resonance to project the often complex textures with all the necessary precision.
