NIU Jazz Ensemble is a Northern Illinois University orchestra established in 1969 by Ron Modell, which has long been considered one of the best college jazz bands in the world. The Orchestra participated in many international festivals and performed with such artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Bellson, Clark Terry, Tito Puente and James Moody. Not to be confused with NIU Jazz Lab Band. Kids Are Pretty People ‎(CD, Album).

To show clearly where his sentiments lie, Ronald Carter, director of the renowned Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble, has included the word "swing (or "swinging ) in the title of each of the four albums the band has released since he took charge of the program nearly a decade ago. The latest, Swinging Every Which Way But Loose-which was actually recorded in 2002-03-easily upholds NIU's reputation as one of the outstanding college-level jazz ensembles on the planet, swinging every which way one can imagine (including loose). I needed to do my first original album, and his playing was masterful, robust, and beautiful. At the time, I didn't realize how suited we were as a team. We're onto our 4rth album together.

This is the third album in a row by the Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble that includes the words swing or swingin’ in its title. I’m beginning to suspect that director Ronald Carter and his apprentices are trying to tell us something. In this case, the announcement is directed toward its audience, as We Came to Swing! was recorded during concerts two summers ago in Peoria and Sandwich, IL; Chesterfield, MO, and on the NIU campus in DeKalb.

WE GOt RYHTM and BLUES" Northeastern Illinois University's 17 Piece Varsity Big Band will present a concert of big band jazz featuring arrangements and compositions of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Bill Holman, Benny Carter, Bob Brookmeyer and oliver Nelson. The concert is presented by The NEIU Music dept.

The EIU Jazz Ensemble is directed by Sam Fagaly. The group has received numerous awards including Outstanding Ensemble and Solo Performance citations at the Notre Dame and Elmhurst College jazz festivals as well as from Downbeat magazine. They have been featured at the International Association for Jazz Education and Illinois Music Educators Association conferences and have performed with legendary jazz artists Mel Torme’, Dizzy Gillespie, Diane Schuur, and Joe Williams among others

The University of Illinois Jazz Saxophone Ensemble gives five select saxophone students the opportunity to grow together as a group in terms of reading, musicianship and improvisation, in conjunction with a full rhythm section. A wide range of compositions and arrangements for this setting are studied, and equal emphasis is placed on reading and soloing. This group is the perfect bridge to playing in one of our big bands, and students greatly benefit from the opportunity to focus equally on both ensemble and solo playing.
