JCA Orchestra, ‘Stories’. By Jon Garelick Globe Correspondent,October 24, 2013, 6:00 . Boston’s Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra here offers eight pieces with thematic narratives, some with words, some not. In November, 1938, composer Darrell Katz revisits a section of The Death of Simone Weil, his six-movement setting of a text by poet Paula Tatarunis about the philosopher and mystic who died in 1943. Or take Jim Hobbs’s positively Ellingtonian instrumental, A Girl. It is, Hobbs’ notes say, A song about a girl. Some stories are pretty simple after all.

The title song, which opens the album, is one of two "concertos" for violin, marimba and jazz orchestra, and was commissioned in 1987 for George Schuller's big band. By Katz's standards this is a rather conventional motif, although the nearly fourteen-minute running time far eclipses its welcome. There's not much more than can or need be said, save to repeat that Katz and the JCA Orchestra clearly believe in what they are doing, and Rats Live on No Evil Star is well-planned and well-performed. Even though it's nowhere near our orbit, respectable marks for that.

Peace Orchestra is an album recorded by Peter Kruder under the Peace Orchestra banner. The album's most well-known track "Who Am I" received a great deal of exposure through its use throughout The Wachowskis' project The Animatrix.
