Toshiko Akiyoshi – Lew Tabackin Big Band. The Toshiko Akiyoshi – Lew Tabackin Big Band was a 16 piece jazz big band created by pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and tenor saxophone/flutist Lew Tabackin in Los Angeles in 1973. In 1982 the principals moved from Los Angeles to New York City and re-formed the group with new members under the name, The Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra featuring Lew Tabackin

In the spring of 1983 I happened to attend a Toshiko/Lew concert at Carnegie Hall in which the band played numerous selections from this album. All I can say is, WOW!!!! I have been a big fan ever since. Just listen to the wonderful arrangements, the stellar performances by all involved. Ellington, Basie, Kenton, you're all great but you got nothing on Toshiko. One person found this helpful.

The Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band recorded frequently during the 1970s, including several LPs for RCA, four of which are heard in part on this 1991 Novus CD compilation. Akiyoshi, a talented pianist who was recommended by Oscar Peterson to producer Norman Granz after he heard her during a tour of Japan in the '50s, proves herself an inventive composer/arranger whose charts don't use commonplace voicings.

All tracks from this album are also included on the 2008 Mosaic 3-CD compilation, Mosaic Select: Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band. Long Yellow Road is also the title of two other Akiyoshi recordings by the Toshiko Akiyoshi Trio (1961) and the Toshiko Akiyoshi Quartet (1970). All arrangements by Toshiko Akiyoshi
