Conductor – Sir Charles Mackerras. Orchestra – Sadler's Wells Orchestra. Pineapple Poll is a ballet suite with music arranged by Charles Mackerras from various Gilbert and Sullivan operas. This is the first recording of this work made in 1951. It was originally released in 1951 by Columbia on 78s and on LP (ML 4439).

Well before Charles Mackerras became a conductor of note, he made an early splash with the Sadler's Wells Ballet Company through arrangements made for choreographer John Cranko from pre-existing music. Mackerras has recorded Pineapple Poll himself at least four times, and this thin-sounding 1977 recording with the London Philharmonic represents his third go at it.
