Steely Dan's fans are notorious for their love of pristine audio quality; they loved virgin vinyl pressings of the Dan's classic studio work and they loved the CD reissues. So the distinction that this 1993 collection is remastered is important, since it gives the hardcore a reason to check it out. Of course, in the years since, the remasters have been replaced by new remasters, most notably the Fagen and Becker-endorsed 1999 reissues, but this was still an improvement over the issues in the marketplace in 1993. Still, this is a really entertaining sampling, heavy on their big hits yet still an accurate portrait of their breadth and depth.

Steely Dan’s lightweight music flaunted a dark heart and beat Patrick Bateman to the synthesis by decades. They also knew how to boogie and wail, as the finest collective of un-ragged instrumentation ever corralled into one ongoing rock project. In tribute to the late Becker, who died yesterday at the age of 67, here are Steely Dan’s best moments. Steely Dan embodied and flaunted their contradictions: spotlessly produced and impeccably performed studio creations about unsympathetic losers and aging, horny sociopaths. They borrowed from the most soulful and emotional black music - twisting but not impenetrable jazz, organ-swole R&B, locked-in funk at least as deep and labyrinthine as the Meters - for an antiseptic, whitewashed, downright creepy waiting-room version that sold sophistication to rockers in the guise of toxic masculinity at its most polished.

Eventually, that became Steely Dan's modus operandi, as Becker and Fagen took a break from touring in the latter part of the '70s to focus on studio work with some of the best sessions players in the business. That led to 2000's Two Against Nature – and the third and final era of Steely Dan studio recordings. By 2003's Everything Must Go, Steely Dan had begun to take a more interior musical approach, focusing on the musical contributions of Becker and Fagen themselves. How do they all stack up? No Dan album has divided opinion like Gaucho. The New York Times called it the best album of 1980 ; Rolling Stone described it as the kind of music that passes for jazz in Holiday Inn lounges. The truth is somewhere in between. Gaucho is a monument to anal-retentive excess, recorded over two years, utilising 42 different musicians. No Steely Dan record for 20 years, then two in three years, and then nothing for 13 years. For a band as unorthodox as this, it makes a strange kind of sense. But if this album does turn out to be their last, it’s a bit of a bum note to go out on.

Steely Dan – Steely Dan is an American jazz rock band whose music also blends elements of crossover jazz, latin music, blue-eyed soul, R&B, boogie, and pop. Founded by core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in 1972, Rolling Stone has called them the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies. Steely Dan reunited in 1993 and has toured ever since. Since reuniting in 1993 Steely Dan has released two albums of new material, the first of which, Two Against Nature, earned a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. They have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock, Steely Dan was listed as one of the 100 greatest musical artists of all time according to VH1. Becker and Fagen met in 1968 at Bard College, in Annandale-on-Hudson, as Fagen passed by a café, The Red Balloon, he heard Becker practicing the electric guitar.
