Smile (stylized as SMiLE ) is an unfinished album by American rock band the Beach Boys that was projected to follow their 11th studio album, Pet Sounds (1966). After bandleader and principal songwriter Brian Wilson abandoned over fifty hours of music recorded over a ten-month period with outside lyricist Van Dyke Parks, the band substituted its release with Smiley Smile (1967), an album containing stripped-down remakes of some Smile material. Smiley Smile sessions immediately followed at Brian Wilson's home studio on June 3. In November 1968 and June–July 1971, the tracks " Cabinessence ", " Our Prayer ", and " Surf's Up " would be treated with overdubs and completed by Carl and Dennis Wilson for other Beach Boys albums.

Pepper at top of album chart. The release of the Beatles Revolver in the late summer of 1966 confirmed the suspicion that (some of) rock 'n' roll was turning into rock, an art form believed to be progressing in sophistication and ambition. And for awhile the Beach Boys appeared to be participants in this unfolding drama. And then the release of Smile kept getting delayed. In June of 1967 the Beach Boys canceled out of the Monterey Pop Festival, the pre-Woodstock, Summer of Love anointing of the Byrds, the Dead, Joplin, Hendrix, the Who, Otis Redding, and Ravi Shankar. Was Brian Wilson worried that the Beach Boys were too square for the hippies? And then the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper. Finally, in September of 1967 the Beach Boys released.

Smiley Smile was one of the most genial and unpretentious examples of psychedelic music to emerge in 1967, although at the time it was a difficult album for many fans to appreciate. A lot of it is comprised of what amounts to languid, almost impressionist sound paintings, some of them, such as "Wonderful" and "Wind Chimes," quite stunningly beautiful, and others, such as "Vegetables," beguiling in their innocent goofiness, while still others, like "With Me Tonight," combined those attributes.

An album called 'Smiley Smile' was issued later that year, but other than a few of the songs and the hint of the title, it had very little to do with his abandoned masterpiece. Over time, a few more of the songs made it onto subsequent Beach Boys albums, albeit in different form, but time marched on. The Beach Boys made more (sometimes great) records, and Brian grew more and more isolated. Any hope of him ever reaching for such bold creative ground again was long buried. While the tapes gathered dust, over the years the legend of 'Smile' grew
