The Spiral' is harsh, but the aggression of the compositions never feels unnecessarily overstated. It is an album that is easy to get dragged into but brutally hard to get out of, disclosing the underhand of control as censurable nurture. The Spiral' goes through an extreme spectre of emotions, trying to be everything, feel everything, at once.

In a way, it smartly creates something with more replay value; some of her prior epics, like Iron Tulip (from 2011’s The Closed Room) showcased a more gradual unfolding. The Spiral opens and closes like smouldering origami - often delicate and complex, beautiful and revealing, yet damaged and destined to crumble. If The Spiral is like an emotional purge, then its winding down is fitting. Much of the album sees Hoffmeier spilling her guts, and the final two songs, No Memory and Slow Agony of a Dying Orgasm, see her fiddling with this now-empty space in her stomach. No Memory has this eerie, masochistic invitation, kinda like Hitchcock’s The Birds mixed with Haneke's The Piano Teacher.

Now Frederikke Hoffmeier, aka Puce Mary returns to the fray for her first solo album in two years, providing her own antidote to noise's clichés and stereotypes with The Spiral. For too long, noise has predominantly seen live bills dominated by grim-faced men in black hoodies bellowing misanthropic and provocative lyrics over confrontational blasts of harsh mulch. With The Spiral, Hoffmeier has built on rich promise to take her rightful place at the forefront of modern, forward-thinking noise music. Compared to it, so much made under the genre's banner seems locked in a self-defeating prism of pointless swagger, but so long as artists like Puce Mary continue to refuse to use noise for noise's sake, and shock value for shock value's sake, then impressive potential futures are emerging.

Talk about Puce Mary - The Spiral

I got a strong IRM/ SKIN AREA vibe from this release. Does somebody agree??
A gnawing, crepitating wash of warm, sea-sick power electronics, eerie spoken word, and almost 'structured' song compositions places this bleakly lovely LP somewhere between the miasmatic claustrophobia of Brighter Death Now, the oscillating skree of the 'pretty' parts of Prurient, and even occasionally reminding me of the blown-the-fuck-out caterwauling electronic garage squall of the Hospitals. Really great LP!
Fantastic album, 'Enter Into Them' sends chills down my spine..
