Isolation (19) ‎– Isolation. Label: Fanny ‎– Fanny 140892. This album is to my ears one of the best folk releases of the 60s-70s and that's competing with quite a huge library of other artists (unfortunately not on vinyl as I have only recently started collecting). By no means a happy album, Isolation sounds constantly desolate with light sprinklings of hope which is most likely owed to the value alongside the general structures and themes of the songs themselves.

Each song on ‘Isolation’ sounds wildly different from the last, but Uchis proves to be the constant, pulling and manipulating the strings in all the right places. For an album that’s 15 tracks to be this consistently good is a rarity, an anomaly, and an artistic triumph that should place it on every Best Of list at the end of the year. For Uchis to accomplish this while still holding on to seemingly all the cards, is even more rare, perhaps signaling a legend in the making.

On Isolation, she never sounds trapped in another era; she sounds free and inventive. And with nary a dud to be found among its 15 tracks, Isolation deserves a spot in the dance pop and neo-soul pantheons.

Kali Uchis opens Isolation with a breezy Brazilian-jazz intro, psychedelic and motoring, as she coos birdlike about physical intimacy. Rio singer/goddess Flora Purim immediately springs to mind, and its ambitious vocal runs invoke cocktails and caftan weather, like Uchis recorded it by the beach. It’s an empathetic way to welcome a listener into an album, but more than that, it’s a statement piece: pointed evidence of the way she’s deepened her range en route to her debut album. Just come closer, closer, closer, she intones. Kali Uchis did not come to play.
