HOLGER CZUKAY is a Krautrock, Progressive Rock artist from Germany. Czukay played bass guitar and performed most of the recording and engineering for the group. He released his first solo album "Canaxis" in 1968.

Like Salvador Dalí or Andy Kaufman, Holger Czukay was an avant-garde provocateur blessed with a look to match his work. Wiry, with a wave of mad-scientist hair and a proclivity for sartorial flair, he seemed the embodiment of his music’s winking, high-low mishmash of groundbreaking electronics, pop kitsch, and nervy confrontation. Czukay works fast and loose with genres, treating them like the radio signals he began processing in Can’s later years. On Cinema, environmental sounds, music, noise, and chatter blur together into an ambient ether, waiting to be tapped into and reprocessed. There are echoes of the Beatles’ phantasmagoric childhood reimaginings circa Magical Mystery Tour, but the Fab Four never really left the pop song behind; Czukay was the opposite.

It was the samples that put Czukay in the same category as David Byrne and Brian Eno: an art rocker exploring the early days concurrently with early hip-hop pioneers (or alternately, a white man exploiting the culture of the third world, depending on who you read). On "Persian Love," Czukay backs up clips of an Iranian singer recorded off the short-wave with lilting guitar and keyboard riffs that sparkle like light. The album is all pleasant, playful textures, with little of the darkness that Can dallied with.

In 1977 Holger Czukay left Can, the band he was part of since its inception in 1968. After acting as the bass player for the band on the classic albums they released in the beginning of the 70s, he moved to a role similar to Brian Eno’s on Roxy Music’s first albums, manipulating tapes and producing sounds via short wave radios and other sources. In 1978 he labored on an album that immediately upon its release in 1979 became a hugely influential recording for many artists due to its unique use of sampling.
